Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
