The buzz about this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team might be building a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
