Guitar Hero Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged the Gap Among Rock Fans

Marking two decades after Guitar Hero hit the market across the Atlantic, giving everyday gamers the tools to become rock legends. Not literally, though you'd be hard-pressed telling that someone who's mastered the epic four-minute guitar solo in front of an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by the developers, Guitar Hero gave players a guitar-shaped controller to match on-screen cues moving along the screen in time with a song. Each riff corresponded to particular chords, producing the sensation of an authentic live show.

The studio previously experimented in the music genre before partnering with RedOctane, later acquired by Activision in 2006. Collaboratively, they established the foundations for a surprising massively profitable franchise which made a remarkable influence on numerous of the artists featured, showcasing classic groups to a new generation of younger players.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO of Harmonix, recalls the early budgetary hurdles in securing the recordings – even though initial releases mostly used rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced every song because the cost prohibitive,” he explains. “Despite having the necessary permissions by themselves, it was extremely difficult. We couldn’t get bands like legendary groups – the publisher had virtually no money, and we were pretty convinced the project would flop. However, when the game became a hit, and record sales airtime were going up, all artists desired to be in.”

He adds: “One of the remarkable aspects was the number of mothers and fathers reached out and thanked us for exposing their kids to the music they loved. It became a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Gains Younger Fans

Irish group the Answer had Never Too Late in the 2008 release the popular installment. Lead musician Paul Mahon recalls the way the game revived older hits back into vogue: “The game provided a bigger, younger audience. Generally this had been considered outdated material, however when it was featured on the title and teenagers discovered it, suddenly it was cool. That legitimised it, eliminating the outdated tag. It gave all our music renewed popularity.”

At that time, the band's debut album remained unreleased stateside, meaning the game served as a primary platform of discovery for the group as they went on US tour opening for the rock giants. “The roadies were playing the song during travel, and several recognized us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs and Lasting Impact

Music's heavyweight names quickly took advantage of the game's success, with Aerosmith, Metallica and others starring in dedicated game editions that focused on their music collections and associated stories, visuals and legendary status. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, it was said to have made the band more money compared to their studio albums. It moved more than half a million copies upon release, and sales of Aerosmith’s music saw an increase significantly at a time when the music business faced decline.

The series still motivates quick-handed dedication within the community. Earlier this year, an online personality completed a remarkable feat featuring Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough power-metal song popularized through Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with almost identical mechanics but an array of customisation options. This track is challenging enough on expert mode, let alone played at increased tempo and without missing every one of the thousands of cues. The streamer stated it took nine months to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero offers a, fantasy thing. If you play Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you should pick up actual weapons and go to war,” notes DragonForce guitarist the artist.

The band had already completed a successful tour when their hit appeared in the third game, but Li says it made them a household name. “I remember the record label informing us that our selling albums rapidly,” he shares. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we performed right ahead of the headliners at the event.”

In fact, the band's visibility via the game proved so vast that it has threatened to eclipsing everything else accomplishments. Recently, the song featured in a trailer for a major film. “In the past I thought otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “Should you just listen to one DragonForce song, that's fine – each person has their own path in music and I’m glad we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

The Lasting Impact of a Iconic Controller

The best promotion, whether it’s for cars, clothes or video games, goes further than selling something – it evokes a desire. Was the game able to harness this? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the creators believed humans have a natural urge to create songs, and their goal was to leverage innovation to allow people to participate”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games were released in just a five-year period between 2005 and 2010, featuring spin-offs like the DJ version, including a spinning deck, and Band Hero. Subsequently, the publisher’s interest on peripherals died down, except for a short-lived revival in 2015.

Titles like Clone Hero and newer releases have maintained the community alive, and there’s set to be something from the original publisher in development. A new studio has entered production on its debut music game. Original co-founders are participating as special advisers. Are gamers prepared to welcome another game following Guitar Hero?

“We thought those games might become similar to sports games allowing annual update every year,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music that it could be perennially popular, so I’ve always been hopeful. It's entirely possible why it can’t continue for future fans.”
