Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
